The Many Uses of Animal Pheromones

Pheromones are chemicals released by a living organism in order to send a clear message to its own species. Animal pheromones are used for a variety of purposes and here you will find some of the most common types.

Common Usage of Animal Pheromones

The most common usage of animal pheromones has to be for reproduction purposes; usually the female will secrete these pheromones at mating time in order to attract the opposite sex. However, male animals secrete pheromones to mark their territory. You may often see dogs, cats and even larger animals urinate in corners or other spaces they consider their territory. They release pheromones that can be detected only by the same species and thus mark their territory.

Animal pheromones are used to set a trail, alarm their species or even warn one another. Many traps today are set by using animal pheromones in order to attract them to it.

Pheromones in Our Daily Life

Pheromones enhance our senses and an easy way to find that out is to smell perfume or flowers, as they all contain a certain percentage of pheromones. In our daily lives, we use scent to connect to a memory whether good or bad. Perfumes have played a huge part in our lives in that aspect. For example, how many times have you remembered a person just by sensing a certain type of scent?

Just like animal pheromones, humans, plants and flowers produce these too and they create the unique scent of a particular person. You can learn to identify these pheromones only if you are close to that person for long periods of time.

Other Uses of Animal Pheromones

Animals use pheromones in their everyday life much more than humans do. Or at least they are much more aware of these scents than we are and therefore they recognize one another, follow and send signals when needed. Or if they are lost, they can use pheromones that can usually be detected by their own species.

Pheromones are present at all times in a living organism but secreted only as and when needed in order to attract the attention of the same species. Insects secrete pheromones as well - usually to set a trail. Ants are a good example as they are famous for the long trails they form that each one follows precisely with the help of the pheromone scent.
