Beauchamps is credited for standardizing the initial five foot ballet positions which are highly considered as fundamental in the dance. It can also denote the various poses of the body which was first used in 1588 by Thoinot Arbeau and set down by Pierre Rameau in The Dancing Master in 1725.

These ballet positions are the starting and ending points for the intricate movements of the dance which we will get to familiarize. In all the ballet positions each leg is turned sideways from the hip. This give the toes extension out to each side and the feet form straight or parallel lines on the floor. The body weight should be evenly distributed over both feet, which can either remain flat on the floor, rest on the balls of the feet (demi-pointe) or rest on the toes (pointe is for women only). Corresponding positions of the arms and hands (port de bras) complete the perfect balance of the figure.

As commonly defined, a ballet leotard is a skin tight one-piece garment that is used in ballet trainings and performances to cover the body and torso of the dancer.  Howeverm the purpose of using a ballet leotard is not just restricted there.  Dancers of ballet also use leotards to keep their feet free from hassles.  Since it fits to the skin tightly, it’s no doubt that the ballet leotard allows the dancer’s feet to move freely as unlike long flowing skirts, it does not interfere the dancer’s movements.

In the early 1970’s, Ballet Folklorico de Stanford was established to present and promote the Mexican culture to the Stanford University. By 1972, the Dance Department of the school started to offer an exhibition class where it provided a formal setting for Ballet Folklorico to be taught. Before such time, the dance was kept alive on the campus through the efforts of individual students who taught themselves and one another. The group’s initial performance was held at the altar of Memorial Church.
Since then, the group has performed Ballet Folklorico throughout the state and had the privilege of performing for former Secretary of State, Schultz, and President Salinas de Gortari of Mexico during the Stanford University’s centennial celebration.
